The standard push up will primarily target your pectoralis major. Pushups also work on the deltoids and the triceps.

To perform the standard push up properly:

  1. Start off with your knees and hands on the floor.
  2. Your hands should be just slightly wider than your shoulders and inline with your chest.
  3. Your arms should be straight to start.
  4. Your feet should be close together with straight legs.
  5. Squeeze your glutes and abs to keep your legs and back in a straight line.
  6. Your head should be inline with your body and it should stay in this position during the push up.
  7. Lower your body until your chest nearly touches the ground and pause before pushing yourself back up to the starting position.
  8. Remember to keep your core tight during the push up.
